In 1975, the office-bearers of Kerala Cancer Society under the leadership of Dr.P.M.Varkey approached the Devamatha Province with a request that the latter start a cancer hospital in the 18 acres of land, on the slopes of Vilangan hills, donated by Sri.Padikkala Anthappan and owned by Kerala cancer society. As far as the Devamatha province of CMI congregation was concerned, hospital ministry was an untrodden path. Nevertheless, after prayerful reflection and after ensuring the co-operation of the public, a Trust deed was executed between Kerala Cancer Society and Devamatha Province on 13th August,1976, whereby Devamatha Province obtained the freedom and right to establish Amala cancer Hospital as Trustees of the Society. Rev. Fr. George Pius Ukken was appointed the administrator of the project. The 90 bed hospital was blessed by Bishop Joseph Kundukulam on 25th March,1978 and was inaugurated by the then President of India Sri. Neelam Sanjeev Reddy in April,1978. The hospital had a meteoric rise under the effective leadership of the Founder Director Rev. Fr. Gabriel Chiramel ( later Padma Bhushan) and the Joint-Director Fr.George Pius Ukken. With a view to securing stability in administration, Amala Hospital was registered as a Society in 1978. Since 2003, the nomenclature has been changed into Amala Institute Of Medical Sciences (AIMS). For more details log on to www.amalaims.org.
